Vision and Mission

Washington Open is a public school, part of Santa Clara Unified School District. Our commitment is to meet and exceed state curriculum standards, and district guidelines and expectations. The process by which we teach and enhance the curriculum is what makes the Washington Open environment unique. 

At Washington Open... 

• The process is as important as the product. Students are nurtured and challenged to reach their educational, social, and emotional goals. There is often more than one way to reach an answer, and we encourage students to pay attention to the how and why of learning -- not just the what of a correct answer. Students learn to articulate and enjoy their educational journeys and take responsibility for each step in the path towards their individual achievements. Students learn how to learn while mastering curriculum standards. 

• Community forms the foundation. Families, teachers, staff, and students partner to create a collaborative, supportive, and vibrant learning environment. Older students become “buddies” to younger students. In the classroom, teachers are supported by families in a variety of instructional approaches, including small-group centers, working one-on-one, and whole-class instruction, sharing expertise and talents. Students and families form strong bonds with teachers and staff. All adults and children are called by their first names, fostering a feeling of friendship and connection between all ages. In good times, we celebrate together, and in hard times, we support each other.. 

• Learning is creative, and so is our school. We provide many opportunities for students to explore and experience learning as a creative process. We have ongoing art, music, and drama sessions throughout the grades, as well as many artistic experiences in the classroom. Our vibrant after-school drama program puts on a first-class musical performance every year. Weekly “Open Sing” provides another creative outlet that is a beloved tradition within our community. History is made real for students by bringing it to life in creative ways. 

• Learn it, See it, Do it! Students don’t just hear or read about what they are learning - they do it. Our play-based Kindergarten centers provide emphasis on the social development needed for young children in their first year of school. First graders learn and explore their natural environment. In second grade students are ready for longer field trips, and more in depth programs. Third grade is the beginning of “living history.” Fourth graders step into the lives of early Californian settlers. Fifth graders take on more responsibilities and learn what it means to become part of our larger society. 

• School is fun! We believe learning should be enjoyable and school should be a fun, safe place. Thanks to innovative lessons, meaningful field trips, and varied approaches to learning, students enjoy coming to school. We recognize that play is an important aspect of a child's education, especially at the elementary level. Laughter and learning take place together. Students leave Washington Open with many happy memories and good attitudes about school. They are well-prepared to succeed at middle school and beyond, both academically and socially.
