Attendance

Regular and on-time attendance is essential for a child's success in school. It is also a requirement established by the State of California State Education Code and Administrative Code, Title V.

Some key excerpts from these sources are:

• Students shall attend school punctually and regularly.

• Students shall be required to provide validation of absence for health reasons.

• Students shall remain on school grounds during the entire day unless granted permission to leave by authorized personnel.

Keep your child at home if:

• They don’t feel well
• Have a fever above 100º within last 24 hours
• Have vomited or had diarrhea within last 24 hours
• Have a severe cough or cold symptoms

Excused Absences

Absences that are considered excused are regulated by California Ed. Code and include:

• Illness (after 3 consecutive days, medical excuse is required)
• Medical/Dental appointment
• Religious observance
• Bereavement for immediate family

Unexcused Absences

Absences that are not excused include:

• Family vacation
• Traffic
• Overslept
• Parent/Caregiver illness
• Car trouble
• Weather

• Gates close at 8:15am, when classes begin.
• Children arriving after 8:15 a.m. must report to the office for a pink tardy slip.
• Students with frequent tardies or absences are reported to the District’s School Attendance and Review Board (SARB.)

If a child needs to leave before regular dismissal time, the parent or guardian must sign the student out in the office. Your child will ONLY be released to those listed on your Emergency Card. Do not go to the classroom to get your child. You must wait in the office until your child reports there. 

If it is your workday and you are signing out your child early, you must still come to the office to sign them out. The office needs to know for safety reasons which children and adults are on campus at all times.

Please do not interrupt your child's education unless it is unavoidable. Medical appointments should be made after school or as late in the day as possible.

At School

The nurse's office is located in the school's main office. The nurse, health clerk, or other office staff will determine whether a student needs to go home due to illness or injury. If it is determined that a student needs to leave because of illness or injury, the office will contact the parent or guardian. If the office is unable to contact the parent or guardian, others listed on the Emergency Card will be contacted to pickup the ill or injured student. If a student is seriously injured, emergency personnel will be contacted to administer medical aid and parents or guardians will be notified immediately. 

According to SCUSD Board Policy 5116.11 regarding Open Enrollment: 

The student may be subject to displacement, however, due to a failure to maintain satisfactory attendance, conduct or academic achievement. Students with ten (10) unexcused absences will be disenrolled as soon as practicable and required to return to their neighborhood school. Students are required to reapply for open enrollment when moving from elementary school to middle school or from middle school to high school.
